For F-1 international students in the United States, Curricular Practical Training (CPT) and Optional Practical Training (OPT) are two common ways to gain lawful work experience. Although both programs allow eligible students to work in positions related to their field of study, their application requirements, timing and authorization procedures are different.
Understanding the OPT and CPT application process can help students avoid delays, maintain valid F-1 status and plan their academic and career paths more effectively.
What Is the Difference Between CPT and OPT?
CPT is generally used for internships, cooperative education programs or other practical training that forms an integral part of a student’s curriculum. It must be directly related to the student’s major and authorized by the school’s Designated School Official (DSO).
OPT allows eligible F-1 students to obtain temporary employment directly related to their major. It may be used before graduation as pre-completion OPT or after graduation as post-completion OPT. Unlike CPT, OPT requires authorization from U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS).
In simple terms, CPT is commonly associated with curricular training during a degree program, while post-completion OPT is commonly used for employment after graduation.
CPT Application Process
The specific CPT requirements may vary by school, but the general process usually includes the following steps:
- Confirm that you meet your school’s CPT eligibility requirements.
- Obtain an internship or employment offer related to your major.
- Register for the required internship course, if applicable.
- Submit the offer letter and CPT application materials to your DSO.
- Receive a new Form I-20 showing the approved employer, employment dates and whether the CPT is part-time or full-time.
- Begin working only on or after the authorized CPT start date.
Students should not begin employment before CPT authorization appears on the new Form I-20. Working outside the approved dates, employer or authorized conditions may affect F-1 status.
Students should also pay attention to the duration of full-time CPT. According to U.S. government guidance, completing 12 months or more of full-time CPT at the same educational level generally makes a student ineligible for OPT at that level. Part-time CPT does not have the same effect.
OPT Application Process
The typical post-completion OPT application process includes:
- Confirm your eligibility and application timeline with your DSO.
- Ask the DSO to enter the OPT recommendation in SEVIS.
- Receive an updated Form I-20 containing the OPT recommendation.
- Prepare and submit Form I-765 and the required supporting documents to USCIS.
- Keep the receipt notice and monitor the status of your application.
- Wait for approval and receive your Employment Authorization Document (EAD).
- Begin employment only after the EAD start date and within the authorized period.
Common application materials may include a copy of the passport, F-1 visa, Form I-94, OPT-recommended Form I-20, photographs and copies of any previous EADs. Students should follow the latest USCIS instructions when preparing Form I-765 because filing procedures, editions and fees may change.
Common OPT and CPT Risks
Some common problems include missing an application deadline, submitting incomplete documents, working without authorization, exceeding permitted unemployment limits, or failing to report changes in employment or address.
Students should also verify whether an employer and position satisfy the applicable requirements. For OPT, employment must be directly related to the student’s major. Students applying for a 24-month STEM OPT extension must meet additional requirements, including working with an eligible employer and completing Form I-983.
Plan Your Internship and Employment in Advance
OPT and CPT are not simply work permits. They are closely connected to a student’s academic program, SEVIS record and F-1 status. Before accepting an internship, changing employers or submitting an application, students should confirm the requirements with their school’s international student office.
